POSITION SUMMARY:

Our goal is to ensure seamless integration of genomic technologies into research projects by offering a wide range of genomic technologies, including Sanger and NGS sequencing, genotyping and gene expression profiling.

Under general supervision of the laboratory manager, the research technologist performs diagnostic genetic testing, equipment maintenance, solution and reagent preparation, monitors inventory in addition to other tasks in a highly complex clinical diagnostic laboratory. The technologist performs diagnostic lab procedures in a timely manner with high degree of accuracy and precision and with an understanding of theory behind tests and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Participates in the design and modification of research protocols and SOPs.

2. Independently performs non-routine, highly specialized experimental procedures, as well as, carries out a wide range of moderate to complex genomics techniques, including DNA/RNA extraction, next-generation sequencing, NGS library preparation/target enrichment, microarrays, and Sanger sequencing.

3. Responsible for the oversight and coordination of lab activities, including quality assurance.

4. May teach moderately difficult to complex lab techniques to students and fellows.

5. Participate in reagent and assay quality control and validations as needed.

6. Follow quality control policies and procedures. Determine appropriate corrective action and follow up, as needed.

7. Ability to operate and maintain moderate to complex lab equipment such as spectrophotometers, sequencers, thermal cyclers, ultra-centrifuges and other scientific equipment related to diagnostic testing.

8. Maintain accurate quality control records, including fridge/freezer temperatures, instrument maintenance, water quality testing

9. Monitors budget and participates in preparation

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Laboratory environment with designated desk, phone lines and computer.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

BS degree in life science with 3+ years post-degree experience in a relevant lab environment. Experience with Next Generation Sequencing strongly preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Consistent with standard office environment.
