Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, installs, maintains and repairs the hospitals plumbing systems. Operates, tests and overhauls water distribution systems, gas distribution systems, waste disposal systems, fire protection distribution systems and others.

Position: General Service Technician Licensed Plumber

Department: Plant Operations

Schedule: Full Time, (Mon-Fri 6:30AM - 3:00PM)

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs all repairs and maintenance of all plumbing systems and components for efficient and cost effective BMC operations including but not limited to medical gas distribution systems, sewage ejectors, sump pumps, lab waste, domestic water distribution systems, heating distribution systems, steam distribution systems, RODI distribution systems, fire protection distribution systems, and others.
  • Plans and performs preventative maintenance schedules as assigned. Makes rounds as assigned and inspects equipment and records. Enters data into appropriate database.
  • Troubleshoots all designated equipment and reports any problems.
  • Performs a variety of duties to install, maintain and repair systems fixtures and equipment.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs the Oxygen and Vacuum Systems. Installs Oxygen, Vacuum and compressed air piping and equipment as necessary.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs such equipment as high and low pressure steam lines, radiators, cooking equipment, sterilizers, dryers, washers and steam tables.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs hospital water, medical gasses, sanitary waste and other such systems as assigned.
  • Performs daily record keeping requirement, including entering and updating work performed in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Maintains appropriate service and repair records.
  • Applies materials to new construction, existing, multi-story buildings, alterations, and re-models.
  • Ensures areas of work are cordoned off for public protection.
  • Sets up scaffolding, rigging and ladders as necessary in a manner consistent with safety codes.
  • Estimates time and materials required; keeps computerized records and submits reports of work performed.
  • Performs removal, installation, and maintenance of plumbing related systems etc.
  • Perform cycle counts and inventories equipment parts and supplies. Prepares stock orders for purchasing and notifies Lead or Supervisor when other supplies are below par.
  • Maintains a clean and dust-free work environment. Ensures work areas are clean and free of debris upon completion of all tasks.

Other duties:

  • Responds to routine and emergency calls for repairs and service.
  • May train and monitor the work of other junior staff or temporary help in the area.
  • Assists and serves as back up to other Facilities employees within their abilities and skill set.
  • Adapts to changes in the departmental needs including but not limited to: adjusting assignments, being flexible to work different hours when needed, etc.
  • Utilizes hospital's behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to support the department and the hospital's mission and goals.
  • Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, so that the best possible customer service may be provided.
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Graduation from high school (or GED), supplemented by completion of a Union, private (in-house), military, or trade school apprenticeship program that includes related theory and on-the-job work.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Massachusetts Plumbing License required, and three to five years of specialty experience.): Other licenses would be a plus, Forklift operation certification, lock out tag out, confined space, MSDS, asbestos and lead identification, ladder safety, emergency evacuation, in-house OSHA and respirator training, infection control.

EXPERIENCE:

  • At least three years as a journey-level plumbing in either a residential, commercial, industrial, or facilities operations setting, experience in medical/laboratory setting a plus.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Knowledgeable in various plumbing methods and practices; ability to properly identify and repair plumbing issues, able to solder and use of press fittings; estimate wait times and materials required on widely varied assignments.
  • Basic computer proficiency to keep computerized records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to follow and give oral and written instructions in English and ability to read, comprehend, and work from plans and blueprints.
  • Highly organized and ability to maintain proper productivity and work flow for multiple projects.
  • Must be a team player and able to maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and respect for a diverse population.
  • Must be able to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting equipment (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing or walking. Must be able to safely use manual tools and power equipment common in the trade. Must be able to safely handle hazardous materials.

Possess and maintain a current, valid Massachusetts driver's license and successfully complete a motor vehicle driving records check.
