The foundation and corporate relations officer is part of a dynamic 24-person staff raising $20-$25 million annually. The officer will play an integral role in helping McLean meet its fundraising goals by applying strategic thinking and tactics, mature judgment, curiosity, superior relationship-building skills and excellent writing abilities to the foundation and corporate gifts activities of the hospital.

The officer identifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards foundation and corporate donors (for five-, six- and seven-figure gifts) and prospects interested in the work of McLean Hospital (clinical care, research and education/training). The officer is expected to become familiar with McLean's strategic priorities and to work collaboratively with the senior foundations officer. The officer will be assigned to specific program areas, which may include Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Women's Mental Health, Alcohol, Drugs and Addiction, and Psychotic Disorders. The foundations officer works closely with the Director of Development, Senior Vice President of Development, President of McLean, and research leadership to further connect current and potential foundation and corporation donors with the mission of McLean.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The Foundation and Corporate Relations Officer, has specific responsibilities including:

* Develop and manage a portfolio of 90+ foundation and corporate donors, prospects, and corporate funders, with the goal of ultimately raising $1M+ annually.

* Conduct discovery work to find new foundation and corporate donors for McLean Hospital using prospecting software, general internet searches and networking.

* Develop and sustain relationships with foundation and corporate program officers.

* Work independently, as well as in collaboration with the senior foundations officer, senior management, clinicians, researchers, and volunteer leaders, to identify priorities for funding.

* Assist McLean clinical and research staff in concept development, prospect identification, proposal writing and submission, and grant reports.

* Monitor trends in foundation and corporate giving and in the field of philanthropy to maximize opportunities for foundation support.

* Develop and write letters of inquiry, concept papers, proposals, and stewardship reports.

* Cultivate and steward foundation and corporate donors, including in-person meetings, zoom and phone.

* Appropriately brief staff and clinicians who participate in foundation and corporate meetings.

* Build and nurture effective working relationships with senior management, clinician, and researchers.

* Track activity and manage moves in CRM donor database.

* Participate in Development special events, as well as cultivation and stewardship events as appropriate (occasionally on weekends or evenings).

* Other projects as identified.

Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required.

* Five or more years of related experience, with a strong preference for direct contact with foundation representatives and a track record of successful fundraising from foundations and corporations

Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required

* Strong dedication to the mission and programs of McLean Hospital.

* Superb writing and editing skills. Solid knowledge of foundation proposal writing and budget development.

* Resourceful self-starter with ability to prioritize, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.

* Intellectual curiosity.

* Ability to understand complex scientific and medical information and then synthesize and communicate this information to diverse constituencies in an effective and compelling manner.

* Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to build successful professional relationships within and across departments and institutions.

* Ability to work independently in a self-directed manner and in collaboration with others.

* Strong organizational capabilities.

* Familiarity with foundation research vehicles.

* Ability to flourish in a fast-paced and demanding environment.

* High level of integrity and mature professional judgment.

* Basic skills with electronic or online systems for communication, clinical and administrative purposes. (This is a required item). Preference for experience with Blackbaud CRM or similar database.
