Under the direction of the Manager Occupational Injury Care & Workers Compensation, this position develops and implements a successful return to work (RTW) program to assist in returning injured UMass Memorial Health employees to the workforce. Provides counseling, direction and supports return to work options, provides case management services, program development functions and assisting with claims handling.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Works in conjunction with the Nurse Case Managers (NCMs) to identify employees who would benefit from RTW services.
  • Meets with and interviews injured employees to obtain a vocational profile and identify services that will facilitate a return to work.
  • Works with in-house resources and external training providers to develop training programs for injured employees to learn new skills and enhance their employability.
  • Meets with hiring and department managers as needed to educate staff about the RTW program. Conducts on-site job analysis to determine essential functions and physical demands ensuring proper placement of the injured employee.
  • Identifies select cases requiring VR services from an outside vendor, as needed. Oversees referrals and manages external vendor VR services.
  • Interacts with various personnel and departments including, but not limited to, NCMs, Employee Health, Human Resources, hiring/department managers, legal and outside vendors to develop a team approach moving injured workers back into the workforce in a cost-effective manner.
  • Develops policies and procedures for a RTW program that works towards reducing workplace injuries, workers' compensation costs and returning the injured employees back to the workforce more efficiently.

Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in rehabilitation or vocational rehabilitation counseling.

Preferred:

  • Master's Degree in rehabilitation counseling or a related field.
  • Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) or Certified Disability Management Specialist (CDMS).
  • Certified Case Manager (CCM).

Experience/Skill:

Required:

  • Minimum five years of vocational case management with minimum of two years leadership experience.
  • Prior experience in returning injured workers into the workforce.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to travel to other locations.
