At the Ragon Institute of Mass General, MIT, and Harvard, the Plant Operator plays a pivotal role in supporting our scientific endeavors. Ensuring the efficient operation of our specialized plant and laboratory equipment, this position is at the crossroads of applied machinery and cutting-edge science. The Plant Operator will maintain high-pressure steam boilers to create clean steam and maintain the central plant's full function and other machinery critical to the Ragon mission throughout the building. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to; the calibration and maintenance of instruments, monitoring of controlled environments, and adherence to stringent safety and research protocols. The ideal candidate will possess a blend of technical expertise, a passion for scientific exploration and meticulous attention to detail. Collaboration with research teams and contributing to our ongoing mission to advance knowledge will be a daily aspect of this role. This full-time, hourly position requires shift flexibility, including evenings, weekends, overnight shifts, and holidays to meet operational needs.

Job Duties:

  • Monitoring and overseeing plant operations, including (2) 100 HP 150 PSI water tube boilers.
  • Assisting with startup, shutdown, and operations of facility equipment.
  • Identifying problems that arise and resolving them.
  • Ensuring that safety and environmental rules and programs are strictly adhered to.
  • Carrying out site inspections and audits.
  • First response to all emergencies.
  • Assists with safety testing such as fire alarms, elevators, and emergency generators.
  • Performing preventative maintenance throughout the plant, as well as in the laboratory and administrative areas.
  • Observing gauges, dials, switches, alarms, and other indicators to ensure all machines work correctly.
  • Maintaining a clean, hazard-free work environment.
  • Uses asset management software, tools, and other devices to control and change equipment settings.
  • Maintains knowledge of plant operation best practices and safety protocols, which may include active participation in refresher and new training coursework.
  • Ability to enter BSL-3 and Vivarium spaces required.
  • Training new hires and cross-training other staff members.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Qualifications:

    • A minimum of a Massachusetts 2nd fireman's license is required.
    • A minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
    • Building management system experience required.
    • A minimum of 3 years of steam boiler operation experience preferred.
    • Ability to adapt to varying working hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
    • A minimum 1-2 years experience using Computerized Maintenance Management systems such as Maximo or Brightly preferred.
    • Wastewater Grade 2-I preferred.
    • Proficiency in math and technical subjects is preferred.
    • An understanding of state and federal regulatory standards.
    • The ability to read blueprints.
    • Thorough understanding of and the ability to repair and troubleshoot equipment used at the power plant.
    • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software to maintain logs and reports.
    • Must be able to lift and/or move objects weighing up to or more than 50 pounds.
    • Openness to varied work schedules, including potential overtime, overnight, holiday, and weekend shifts is required. A fixed shift will be determined upon hire based on operational needs.
