Camp STAR is a fully integrated day camp setting for children with cognitive, emotional, sensory, and/or behavioral disabilities. Children get the chance to participate in activities every day with their friends and learn from hands on peer modeling. As a member of the Y camp staff, you will assist in the supervision and direction of campers, lead fun and engaging activities as well as participate in the development and implementation of camp programs. It will be your responsibility to carry out and ensure safety guidelines, following all rules and procedures. Camp STAR Staff participate in all program areas as needed, they must remain alert and attentive to the personal and/or health needs of the campers, reporting, and responding as appropriate.

Camp STAR counselors lead with compassion, have experience or interest in working as a behavior technician, inclusion specialist, occupational therapist, or in special education, with an understanding of social/emotional learning and a variety of teaching styles. To thrive in this position Counselors are able to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques, responding both verbally and non-verbally to behavioral needs as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Camp Counselors must be 18 years of age and have graduated from high school, preferably some relevant college coursework completed
  • Preferred work schedule is Monday-Friday (5 days) throughout the camp season 8:00-5:00
  • Must have reliable transportation to ensure the ability to commute to and arrive at camp on time daily
  • Must be available for training days tentatively scheduled on Saturdays before camp starts
