The Naqvi lab at Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School is looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic Research Assistant to start July 2024. Our group combines functional genomics and computational modeling with stem cell-derived models of development to gain a quantitative understanding of gene regulation in development and the resulting "tipping points" in disease. Projects utilize highly quantitative tools to understand how perturbations to the levels of transcription factors lead to human variation and disease across a range of systems, including the developing face and gut. This position represents an excellent opportunity to help establish an exciting research program at the interface of gene regulation, human genetics, and developmental biology, all while building an open and stimulating lab environment. Additional opportunities and training in data analysis and machine learning are possible, and mentorship will be provided to attain career goals. A two-year commitment is preferred. This Research Assistant I will be responsible for:

  • Stem cell culture, maintenance, and differentiation
  • Genome editing using CRISPR-Cas9 and related tools
  • Functional genomics and associated molecular biology techniques
  • Performing the following techniques typically required for the laboratory/study:
    • Maintains records of results and methodologies in a log of work performed.
    • Maintains equipment, lab area, and supplies in a neat professional manner.
    • Sterilize and clean glassware, and prepare media and other materials using appropriate procedures.
    • Inventories supplies, alerts supervisor to needed supplies, or mixes standard reagents.
    • Processes order for supplies and/or animals. Attends courses in safety procedures for handling, storage, and disposal of biohazardous, flammable, corrosive, and toxic materials.
    • Carries out all laboratory activities in compliance with applicable regulations and protocols.
  • Conducts literature searches and reviews, compiling information for journals and suggesting uses for new techniques to the P.I.
  • Attends courses, lectures, and conferences to further own knowledge of research and laboratory techniques, consulting with other researchers and technicians to exchange information.
  • Contributes to the team within and between departments and organizations.

In order to qualify you must have:

  • A Bachelors' Degree in Biology/Molecular Biology/Developmental Biology or a related field
  • Some wet lab experience is preferred
  • Strong undergraduate coursework
  • Demonstrates strong interest in our laboratory's goals.
  • Able to comfortably communicate with PI and other members of the lab
  • Have strong organizational skills.
  • Have the ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities as needed.
  • Able to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Able to assist with planning specific research procedures.
  • Is eager to learn new concepts.
