Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Senior Network Administrator position. The Senior Network Administrator is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $115,000 per year - commensurate with experience. The Senior Network Administrator at Amherst College is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the college's network infrastructure, ensuring seamless connectivity, and providing critical support to a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff. This position requires strong technical expertise, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders both inside and outside of IT.
In this position, you will serve the central mandate of the networking team: to provide secure, fast, and reliable network connectivity to every student, faculty, and staff regardless of their physical location. The position will be hybrid with both remote and on-campus responsibilities - you will need to reside in Massachusetts or Connecticut to be eligible for this position.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Infrastructure Management
Design, configure, and manage the college's network infrastructure, including switches (Juniper), routers, firewalls (Palo Alto), and wireless access points (Aruba)
Implement and maintain network policies, access controls, and firewall rules to protect data and ensure network security
Provide tier-3 support for network-related issues, resolving complex problems and collaborating with other IT staff to troubleshoot and diagnose network problems.
Participate in on-call rotation for after-hours support as needed (approximately one week every 2-3 months); respond to network emergencies and unplanned outages when they arise (including being on campus); and perform scheduled changes during our change window
Assist in the development and maintenance of disaster recovery and business continuity plans
Design and Implementation
Assess network capacity and plan for future growth and expansion to meet the evolving needs of the college
Stay updated with industry best practices and emerging technologies to recommend network upgrades and improvements
Review and revise network topology to ensure that it is optimized for current needs
Recommend design changes to the Systems and Networking team and execute against these changes using the ITIL 4 process
Maintain detailed network documentation, including network diagrams, configurations, and standard operating procedures
Mentor junior staff and provide guidance on network-related issues
Serve as a networking technical project lead/project manager, developing implementation plans and coordinating projects involving multiple people, including collaborations with Facilities Services and other departments on technology services for campus building and renovation projects and data center management
Systems Monitoring and Security
Monitor network performance and security and proactively address issues, remediate vulnerabilities, and optimize network resources
Automate network device configuration, operations, health and performance, and security monitoring
Qualifications:
Required
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or equivalent experience
A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in network administration with a focus on managing complex network environments. Certifications in one or more of the following will be highly preferred:
Juniper Network Certification - JNCIA, JNCIS-*, JNCIP, JNCIE, etc.
Aruba Mobility Certification - ACMP, ACMX, ACMX, etc.
Aruba Switching Certification - ACSA, ACSP, ACSE, etc.
Aruba Clearpass Certification - ACCA, ACCP, ACCX, etc.
Palo Alto Certificiation - PCNSE, PCNSA, PCCSP, etc.
Cisco Network Certification - CCNA, CCNP, CCIE, etc.
Strong knowledge of network protocols, routing, switching, and security at L1 (including CAT 5e/6 and single- and multi-mode fiber) as well as L2/3
Experience with network monitoring and management tools
Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
