Job Details:

Reporting to the Manager of Blood Bank and Transfusion Services (BBTS), this position is responsible for the day to day technical and operational oversight of the Blood Bank and Stem Cell Laboratory. The Supervisor keeps the Manager informed of all necessary information. In collaboration with the Manager, the Supervisor will assist in maintaining all regulatory requirements, maintenance of the analytical systems of the laboratory, daily monitoring of the quality control program directing subordinate personnel.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Works with Senior Techs to create schedules. Ensures all schedules provide adequate Blood Bank coverage.
  • Ensures the validity and accuracy of test results obtained by laboratory personnel in the Blood Bank and Stem Cell Laboratory Sections daily.
  • Presents patient cases at biweekly Medical Rounds with Manager.
  • Supervises/reviews required daily quality control and equipment maintenance. Daily reviews worksheets and cross match workups which require supervisory review.
  • Assists with competency assessment of laboratory personnel in the Blood Bank and Stem Cell Laboratory. Monitors technologist compliance with Continuing Education credits and completion of Tufts Medical Center Mandatory Education.
  • Provides direct technical assistance or support to technologists. Performs routine work area test procedures as necessary. Investigates /troubleshoots complex procedural and analyzer problems. Places service calls as required for immediate equipment repair.
  • May review and revise laboratory procedures. May be involved in new employee and student teaching.
  • Daily monitors the workload vs. staffing and takes action to maintain productivity within acceptable limits. Adjusts daily schedules to ensure work area coverage at all times.
  • Keeps current with new technology through literature review and attendance at conferences and workshops. Attends training classes for new analyzer systems. Will be involved in teaching the new systems.
  • Ensures compliance with all laboratory safety regulations. Assists QA Manager with inspection preparation and during inspections as needed.
  • Assists Manager with personnel interview and selection, performance evaluations, and discipline of BBTS technologists (as necessary).
  • Maintains collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working groups achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment.
  • Serves as backup for Manager during his/her absence.
  • Performs other similar and job-related duties as required or directed.
Job Qualifications:

JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Good working knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the types of instruments and analytical systems, manual and automated used in the laboratory.
  • Good working knowledge of the operation of computerized data processing and laboratory information systems.
  • The ability to direct and supervise effectively a large group of technologists.
  • The ability to organize and coordinate a variety of complex tasks to achieve consistent and efficient production and delivery of high quality laboratory work.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's Degree of Science or Medical Technology from an accredited college or university.
  • Masters Degree in Medical Technology, SBB, Healthcare or Business Administration preferred.
  • ASCP or NCA certification required.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Technical experience of 5 or more years working in an accredited Blood Bank. At least 2 of these years must have been in a leadership role in a hospital laboratory of similar size, range of tests, instrumentation and workload.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Works with infectious bodily substances including blood and employs universal precautions.
  • Work requires frequent computer use, including Word and Excel.
  • Work includes maintenance and operation of laboratory equipment
