Company OverviewWe need dedicated new educators to close the achievement gap in Rhode Island. The Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) has set high standards for student achievement in order to ensure that students who meet Rhode Island’s standards can compete anywhere. And, many of our students are mastering reading, writing, and mathematics at levels that outpace our nation’s average. Students in the suburban and urban-fringe districts in the state are performing as well or better than similar districts nationwide. However, for students who happen to live in our cities and attend school in one of our urban school districts, the achievement gap is significant. In these urban or “central city” districts, where most of our students in poverty and English-language learners reside, our students perform well below the national average – with achievement levels lower than similar districts nationwide. Students in these schools are counting on the opportunity to compete and can do so if they are provided an education equal to their suburban peers. You can play a vital role in changing this imbalance. Students in our urban communities need a brighter future. This is your chance to take action and make a positive impact in the lives of our students. Start your career as an educator by applying to Rhode Island Teaching Fellows. Teach where you are most needed. Impact the lives of your students. Rhode Island Teaching Fellows seeks outstanding professionals and recent graduates to make a difference in the lives of students who most need you. This highly-selective program is designed to recruit and train socially-driven individuals, like you, who want to make a difference in public education in Rhode Island by becoming teachers in some of our highest-need public schools. The Teaching Fellows program will offer over 25 new teachers this year the opportunity to join this selective accelerated route into the classroom. We are looking for outstanding candidates to teach critical shortage subject areas such as secondary math, science and special education in classrooms within the urban school districts in Rhode Island that have historically had a record of low student achievement. Candidates will benefit from a streamlined application and selection process and, if selected, will have the opportunity to participate in an intensive Training Institute in summer 2009 before entering their classrooms as full-time teachers in the fall. Fellows will pursue their teaching certification while teaching full-time and will receive a full-time teacher’s salary once they begin teaching in the fall. There is no one profile of an ideal Rhode Island Teaching Fellows candidate. Fellows may be fresh out of college and ready to leverage their academic success into a teaching career. Fellows may be professionals with years of experience in the business or non-profit world who are ready to change careers to make an impact where they are most needed. As a Fellow, you will become part of a dynamic and dedicated network of new educational leaders, working with other progressive educators throughout Rhode Island to raise academic achievement in our urban public schools...starting in your classroom. |
