MAPSCorps Data Intern
MAPSCorps is a not-for-profit organization based in Hyde Park, Chicago. Born at the University of Chicago, MAPSCorps uses an approach called asset-based community-engaged research to ensure that our science serves community priorities and needs. MAPSCorps utilizes technology, cross-sector collaboration, and youth engagement to generate visibility for all the vital assets of a community.
MAPSCorps employs and delivers STEM and health-focused programming to local high school youth who map existing resources in Chicago, New York, Hawaii, and Evanston, IL. Working in teams, MAPSCorps participants walk the blocks of our communities, observing, collecting, and analyzing data about all public-facing businesses and organizations. Throughout the course of the program, each team prepares an extensive research project that has a social determinants of health focus and presents it at the program's culminating event, the Scientific Symposium.

The Position:
MAPSCorps is hiring Data Interns who will report to the Data & Technology Manager. Data Interns are graduate, undergraduate, or recently graduated individuals who process data to ensure data quality. Data Interns assist in preparing secondary data for community asset mapping, monitor the data during the six-week mapping period, and conduct data cleaning after the mapping period. During the mapping period, Data Interns also provide guidance to field teams (based on errors found while monitoring the data) to improve the data collection and mapping protocols. Data Interns are paid $18/hour and work approx. 30 hours per week.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Supporting field team training in data collection
Monitoring MAPSCorps data quality and providing guidance to the field teams
Identifying and servicing Data Requests and survey analysis.
Designing and managing data cleaning projects to ensure quality
Supporting MAPSCorps phones and MapApp, loading the app, activating phones, reloading data plans, and assisting to troubleshoot phone and app issues
Communicating data issues to the Data & Technology Manager
Producing data and other progress reports on a regular basis
Maintaining robust data systems.
Strategically implementing dashboards and data visualizations for administrative support
Qualifications:
Students with Science-Technology-Engineering-Math (STEM) majors preferred
Exceptional attention to detail
Experience using Excel/Google Sheets to manipulate and analyze large data sets; R Studio and Python also preferred
Demonstrated organizational skills
Excellent communication skills, especially in communicating data and technology issues to audiences less familiar with those areas
Experience conducting qualitative research
Aptitude and adaptability for a fast-paced, dynamic work environment
Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds
Ability to work in a mature and respectful manner, including being reliable and trustworthy
Prior involvement with the MAPSCorps program is a plus
Experience using ArcGIS or other mapping software is a plus
