We are looking for a research assistant excited about translational research to join the Daniel Anderson lab at the Koch Institute of Integrative Cancer Research, MIT to support research projects on developing medical devices for treating diabetes. This is a highly interdisciplinary project at the intersection of device engineering, materials science, and molecular biology; and involves multiple collaborations. The role will involve device fabrication (microfabrication), in vitro testing, and pre-clinical testing in animals. In addition, the person will be expected to maintain accurate laboratory records, and stock laboratory supplies. This is a great opportunity for engineers interested in gaining research experience in an interdisciplinary area combining engineering with translational research before applying for graduate/medical school.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1. Performs fabrication and testing of devices (under direction) using a variety of laboratory protocols and equipment. Records results accurately and troubleshoots procedures.

2. Maintain mammalian cell lines, and perform biomolecular assays (ELISA, qPCR, western blots, and others).

3. Performs animal work that involves surgery, regular bleeds, blood glucose measurements, etc.

4. Keeps accurate logs of all experiments performed and communicates findings to supervisor.

5. Attends courses in safety procedures for handling, storage and disposal of biohazardous, flammable, corrosive and toxic materials. Carries out all laboratory activities in compliance with applicable regulations and protocols.

6. Conducts literature searches and reviews, compiling information for journals and suggesting uses for new techniques to the P.I. Attends courses, lectures and conferences to further own knowledge of research and laboratory techniques, consulting with other researchers and technicians to exchange information.

7. Contributes to the teamwork within and between departments and organizations.

Minimum Knowledge and Skills required by the Job

1. Work requires the knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree in Biological/ Chemical/ Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or any closely related field, and previous lab experience.

2. Staff will be trained to use the relevant techniques. Previous experience with some of the following techniques would be advantageous;

   1. microfabrication or microfluidics

   2. mammalian cell culture

   3. biomolecular assays (ELISA, Western Blot, RNA extraction, qPCR, confocal microscopy)

   4. Animal work (surgery, bleeding, blood glucose measurements, necropsy)

3. Work requires the analytical skills to resolve problems that require the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles. Work requires the ability to exchange information on factual matters, schedule appointments, keep accurate records of procedures in the lab and good communication skills with other team members.
